Eulogy of Andreas Kefalianos - 10th May 2024
Bishop Siloan, Reverend Fathers, Family and Friends,
Today, we gather to remember and celebrate the life of Andreas Kefalianos. Born on the 26th of May, 1949 on the beautiful Island of Samos, in the town of Pythagoreio.
He was the son of Ioannis and Polyxeni, adored brother of Alexandra Lyrtzis and Stamatia Levendis. Andreas was a devoted husband to Rosemary, loving father to his four children, John, Jim, Nick, and Jenni, much loved father in-law to Philia, Lia, Katie and Peter, and adored Pappou of his 7 grandchildren, Nicola, Melina, Paulina, Elsa-Marie, Marilia, Andreas, and Estelle.
He was also a respected Uncle, Godfather, Cousin, Friend, and Mentor to many.
His journey from Greece to Australia, together with his family, began in 1954, at the young age of five, which marked the beginning of an adventurous and fulfilling life.
After a short stay in Bonegilla Migrant Reception Centre in Victoria, they settled in Peterborough where they lived for around 10 years. The Peterborough Greek community was close-knit, and the families formed strong bonds which have lasted to this day.
In 1966, Andreas moved to Port Pirie, together with his parents and younger sister Stamatia, so that he could complete Year 12. The family bought ten acres of land at Nelshaby and built their family home and market garden, where they grew tomatoes, capsicums, zucchini and rockmelon for the wholesale markets in Adelaide.
After completing year 12, his perseverance and academic excellence eventually led him to the University of Adelaide where he studied and completed a Bachelor of Metallurgy. Unfortunately, in this field, at that time, work was difficult to find in South Australia, so he decided to go back to Port Pirie and began teaching at Risdon Park High School from 1972 – 1976.
In 1976, aged 26, Andreas was the president of St George Greek Orthodox Church in Port Pirie. In that same year he met his beautiful wife to be, Rosemary Langanis, and was married later that year in Adelaide, where they celebrated with 570 guests.
Together with their four children, they spent many weekends and school holidays on the family farm in Port Pirie where great memories were created.
A respected educator, Andreas taught mathematics and science, and later found his passion in computing. He was instrumental in introducing the first computers at Morialta High School, where he taught for many years. When we cross paths with past students, the comment is often made ….Mr Kef taught me how to use a computer!
Andreas also worked in leadership positions across several schools, including Norwood High School and Para Hills High School, where he served as Deputy Principal until his retirement aged 65.
Although coming to Australia at a young age of 5, Andreas was proud of his Greek heritage. He carried Samos in his heart throughout his life and was actively involved on the Committee of the Samos Association for over 30 years.
He also served on several other committees throughout his life, including the board of St George College, and more recently, the President of The Greek Orthodox Community of Prophet Elias Norwood from 2016 to 2022, where his health unfortunately forced him to resign. We are all very honoured to see his name on the plaque mounted to the Education and Cultural Centre Hall situated behind us today. He had a passion for Education and Greek Culture, which is something he has instilled into both his Children and Grandchildren. We hope for this to continue for generations to come.
Andreas had a lot to offer. He was intelligent, wise and committed to whatever he put his mind to. He was a mathematical genius, but why wouldn’t he be, given that he was born in Pythogoreio, the birth place of Pythagoras.
Even when his speech was limited to single word answers, 48 hours before he passed away, I asked him a question…. “Dad, how many KM’s in a nautical mile?” and within 5 seconds, his soft voice replied… “1.852”. A number I will never forget. He was a walking encyclopedia, right until the end.
Andreas was a proud Pappou to his six Granddaughters and one Grandson Andreas, who will proudly carry on the Kefalianos name.
We are all fortunate to have had such a gentleman as a father who guided us through life, tried to push us hard to study being the academic he was, but he also never demanded we follow a certain path. He knew our qualities and guided us each to the paths we followed. He always supported our decisions on whatever we did and was a believer of ensuring we learnt from our mistakes.
Before there was CANVA there was Andy Kef, or Mr Kef as he was known by many. Whenever there was a party of any sort, Andy was the one to prepare the invitation. Also, if there was ever a computer problem, Andy would be the one to call.
He loved the outdoors and nature. He was an avid photographer and embraced his surroundings whether on a walk, overseas, at the beach or doing photo shoots with his grandchildren. He would always position us to make sure the photo was always “picture perfect”. His catch phrase in a sarcastic voice was “tell me when you’re ready!”
On family holidays, he would make us walk for miles, making sure every moment was captured. When I say every moment, I mean every tourist attraction was caught on camera.
Dad also enjoyed taking us on camping trips, where he would show case his skills he learnt at scouts.
He loved the beach. Australia Day at Aldinga became a favourite family outing for all our extended family, whom he loved dearly. As the Greek Aussies converged on Silver Sands, out came the tents, chairs, BBQ, masses of food, Greek music, Greek coffee and the best thing of all….Andy’s Speedos! Speedos were a staple for Andy at the beach. For all of you who really knew dad, it was a site for all to see.
Today, as we gather to honour Andreas Kefalianos, we are surrounded by a sea of faces, reflecting the depth of his impact on all of us.
His gentle demeanour touched the hearts of many, and today, as we gather, we are uplifted by the shared memories and stories we hold dear.
On behalf of the Kefalianos family, we are all blessed and honoured to be supported by our extended family and many friends, but more importantly, our amazing Mother. Mum, thank you so much for caring for Dad right to the end. Your care, love and selflessness is an inspiration to all of us, and we all love and appreciate you so much.
Dad, may your memory be eternal. May your presence be felt from above. May your legacy of kindness, wisdom, and integrity, continue to inspire us all.
THANK YOU
